Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)
  • cups warm water (between 100°F and 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, plus more for greasing)

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  • Once the yeast is frothy, stir in the melted butter and salt. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Shape the kneaded dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover it and let it rise until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.

Shaping and Baking

  • Once risen, punch down the dough gently. Shape it into a loaf by flattening it and rolling it into a tight cylinder.
  • Place the shaped dough seam-side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.

Notes

Adjust flour based on humidity; replacing some water with milk enhances flavor. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
