  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature Ensure your butter is at room temperature for optimal blending and a smooth texture.
  • 4 cups powdered sugar Plus more for consistency if needed.
  • 2-4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk Use for adjusting consistency.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract You can substitute with other flavored extracts.
  • Optional: food coloring For customization.

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, add the softened unsalted butter. Using an electric mixer, beat the butter on medium speed until it is light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed to prevent a cloud of sugar. Once incorporated, raise the speed to medium and beat until fully combined and creamy.
  • Pour in the heavy cream or milk and the vanilla extract. Continue mixing on medium speed until well-combined, adjusting the consistency as needed.
  • Taste the frosting and add more powdered sugar if desired, depending on your sweetness preference. Mix again until fully blended.
  • For a deeper flavor or color, add any optional food coloring or other flavor extracts. Mix until the desired hue and flavor are achieved.
  • Once complete, use your buttercream immediately or store it in an airtight container for later use.

Notes

This recipe can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week; just re-whip before using. For chocolate buttercream, substitute half a cup of powdered sugar with cocoa powder.
