  • 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
  • 2 large eggs, divided
  • 4 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
  • ½ cup cooked and crumbled bacon or sausage (optional)
  • ½ cup fresh spinach or herbs, chopped (optional)

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Add 2 eggs, melted butter, flour, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  • Transfer dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour.
  • Once risen, punch down the dough and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle, about ½ inch thick.
  • Sprinkle cheese, cooked bacon or sausage, and spinach or herbs evenly over the surface.
  • Roll the dough tightly from one long side to form a log. Pinch the seams to seal and slice into 12 equal pieces.
  • Place the rolls cut side up on a prepared baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Cover with a cloth and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) while they rise.

Baking

  • Beat the remaining egg and brush it over the tops of the rolls.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes, until golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
  • Allow rolls to cool for a few minutes before serving warm.

Notes

For deeper flavor, experiment with herbs like rosemary or thyme in the dough. Make these rolls ahead of time and freeze unbaked rolls; just let them rise again before baking.
