  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 100°F/38°C)
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar, Gruyère, or your favorite)

Optional Ingredients

  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder for added flavor
  • 1 tablespoon fresh herbs (such as rosemary or thyme, chopped)

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and instant yeast. Stir with a wooden spoon until evenly mixed.
  • Slowly add the warm water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  • Fold in the shredded cheese, ensuring an even distribution throughout the dough.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel. Let the dough rest at room temperature for 12 to 18 hours.

Baking

  • After the resting period, preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and place your Dutch oven in the oven to heat for 30 minutes.
  • Lightly flour a clean surface and turn the dough out onto it. Shape it into a ball.
  • Place the dough on a piece of parchment paper and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the pot from the oven and using the parchment paper, lift the dough and place it into the hot pot.
  • Cover with the lid and bake for 30 minutes, then remove the lid and bake for another 15-20 minutes.
  • Remove the bread from the pot and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, experiment with different cheeses or herbs. This bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for a day or two.
