Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1.25 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (optional) for added richness

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Use a whisk to mix well, ensuring that the yeast and salt are evenly distributed.
  • Gradually pour in the warm water while mixing with a wooden spoon or your hands until the dough forms a rough ball.
  • Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm spot for about 20-30 minutes.
  • Once risen, transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  • Let it rest for another 10 minutes before scoring the top with a sharp knife.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) while the dough rises.
  • Place the shaped loaf onto a prepared baking sheet and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust turns a deep golden brown.
  • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, mix in herbs or cheese to the dough before baking. Brush the loaf with melted butter right after it comes out of the oven for a soft crust.
