  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1.5 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F/43°C) Make sure it's warm, not hot.

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and active dry yeast. Use a wooden spoon to mix the dry ingredients until evenly blended.
  • Gradually pour in the warm water while stirring the mixture until a shaggy, sticky dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours until it doubles in size.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and place your Dutch oven (with lid) inside to heat for about 30 minutes.
  • Carefully remove the hot pot, turn the dough onto a floured surface, and shape it into a round loaf.
  • Transfer the dough into the hot pot, cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the crust is golden brown.
  • Remove the bread and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, experiment with different types of flour, and let the bread cool completely before slicing for cleaner cuts. This dough can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
