Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 loaf loaf of day-old sourdough or French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes Use day-old bread for best results.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2–3 stalks celery, diced
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth Use in increments to moisten the bread.
  • 1 Tbsp fresh sage, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 Tbsp fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup diced cooked sausage, for added flavor Optional.
  • 1 cup dried cranberries or apples for sweetness Optional.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut the bread into cubes and let it sit out for a while.
  • In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the diced onion and celery, cooking for 4–5 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • Pour the mixture over the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl. Add the broth gradually to moisten the bread evenly.
  • Add the sausage or dried fruits if using, and fold them in gently.
  • Transfer the stuffing into a greased baking dish, spreading it evenly. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes.

Baking

  • After 20 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes to crisp the top.

Notes

For best results, use day-old bread; allow stuffing to cool slightly before serving. For added flavor, consider sliced mushrooms or dried fruits. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
