Ingredients

For the batter

  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 0.5 cups milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cups apples, peeled and diced (about 1 medium apple)
  • Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola oil works well)
  • Optional: powdered sugar for dusting Use for topping if desired.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  • In another bowl, combine the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  • Fold in the diced apples, ensuring they are evenly distributed.

Cooking

  • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan.
  • Fry the bites for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown, using a slotted spoon to turn them gently.
  • Transfer the cooked bites to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil and allow to cool slightly.
  • Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

Notes

For enhanced flavor, let the batter rest before frying. If preferred sweeter, drizzle a glaze made from powdered sugar and milk over the bites after cooling. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days and reheat in an oven.
